Genset Cooling System Repair For Oil & Gas Compressor Station – Case Study

When it comes to servicing back-up generators our team understands how urgent it is to get your genset up and running again as quickly as possible. That’s why we have a mobile team that travels across Western Canada so that we can assess and do repairs quickly and efficiently.

This was the case for a recent repair we did for a back-up generator cooling system for a major oil & gas company with pipeline and energy facilities across Canada and beyond.

Here’s a look at the genset cooling system repair we did to help our client’s back-up generator’s heat exchanger run more efficiently.

The Job – Onan Generator Heat Exchanger Repair At Compressor Station

Though we work on backup generator heat exchangers for a wide range of OEMs, including, but not limited to, Cat, Detroit, Cummins and Onan, this specific job was for an Onan generator.

The client called our mobile service team to come take a look at their Onan generator at their compressor station. Our team easily travelled to the job site with our mobile service trailer, which comes fully equipped with safety-certified shop technicians and all the necessary tools needed to complete the job on-site. This is a service we offer to customers located across the prairie provinces; Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The Problem – Onan Generator Leaking Coolant

The big issue the client needed our help with was that the generator’s cooling system wasn’t working as efficiently as the plant needed it to. Our client’s maintenance team informed us that every time the cooling system’s temperature increased, it would spill coolant.

A major issue was that these spills meant the maintenance team had to do daily checks on the Onan generator. Our team wanted to ensure that our client had an efficient generator that no longer required constant maintenance after servicing.

The Solution – Fixing Leaking Coolant From Generator With Reservoir

Our team started by heading out to inspect the client’s back-up generator’s cooling system and further determine the issue it was having.

Our shop technicians identified that the back-up generator needed a separate reservoir to hold coolants so its radiator could properly draw and retract coolant as needed. Completing this fix would allow our client to run their back-up generator without needing to check it daily!

Knowing how crucial it is to fix a leaking heat exchanger and have a back-up generator operating, our team wanted to get this job done within 24 hours so that our client didn’t have to invest in a back-up unit.

Once we determined the issue, our mobile service team took the radiator to our Saskatoon shop for repairs.

To prevent coolant from spilling out and to put a stop to ongoing maintenance, our mechanics built an efficient all-aluminum coolant reservoir to sit above the rad. Our aluminum manufacturing plant allowed us to build a custom reservoir with stronger and more conductive materials than the steel/coper-brass used by the OEM.

The new reservoir is half-full with coolant, allowing the rad to use the reservoir as needed and prevent more spills from happening.

Our Winnipeg shop manufactures custom aluminum parts that we stock at our other locations in Saskatchewan, allowing us to create the all-aluminum reservoir used for this client.

The Result – Leak-Free Onan Generator

The Onan generator no longer leaks coolant! Our client now runs their back-up generator’s cooling system around the clock without requiring ongoing maintenance and coolant level checks.
