Inside A Day At WER: Behind the Scenes of a Full Service Rad Shop

In this special 65th-anniversary edition reflection blog, we’re taking you behind the scenes to see what a day-in-the-life of an employee at West End Rad is like!

A lot happens in a single day at West End Radiators. From our busy shop to our energetic sales team, each of our 3 locations is always buzzing with activity.

In this blog, we’re pulling back the curtain to share what a typical day really looks like.

7:50am – All 3 of our locations open their doors for the day

The day starts with unlocking our doors, turning on the lights and getting the shop ready for the day ahead.

8:01am – Our phones start ringing and our customer service team gets to work!

Our Sales and Service Advisors get right to work answering customer emails and phone calls to ensure each customer’s needs are addressed quickly and efficiently.

8:10am – Key members of our shop and service teams meet for a morning “huddle” to review work orders

To make sure every department is on the same page, our team has a quick meeting to go over current projects in the shop and align on priorities for the day.

8:50am – Our service centres come alive with all departments buzzing

Painting

Our rad tech, Jon, puts the finishing touches on a large locomotive radiator with a final coat of paint, ensuring a durable finish that’s built to withstand demanding conditions.

9:30am – The shipping department starts picking up

Our shipping team builds custom crates to safely secure parts for transport, making sure they arrive to customers undamaged and ready for installation

10:30am – Our Outside Sales teams check-in with key accounts

Over in Saskatoon, our sales team member, Josh, hops on a call with a customer to talk about our custom heat exchangers and reverse engineering capabilities.

11:00am – A semi-truck fuel tank gets rebarelled

Back in the shop, our rad tech uses our in-house roller machine to give damaged fuel tanks tanks a fresh start with new material that’s 39% thicker than the OEM.

12:00pm – Team lunch to celebrate the last Friday of the month!

The team comes together for a pizza lunch, taking time to relax and catch up after a busy morning of work.

1:00pm – Back to work!

In Estevan, Sales and Service Coordinator Trisha wraps up a recore job by connecting with the customer and handing over their completed invoice.

2:00pm – Our engineering team reverse engineers a part with our 3D scanner

3D Scanning

With a quick 3D scan, our engineer Peyton works on creating a custom fix for a heavy-duty heat exchanger. Custom engineering a new solutions helps it handle tough conditions and extreme environments with ease.

3:00pm – Our aluminum and copper-brass core manufacturing plants run full steam ahead

Our copper-brass and aluminum assemblers work across both our copper-brass and aluminum core manufacturing plants.

They apply their skills to build a wide range of cooling system parts. Having both manufacturing plants in-house lets our team choose the best material for every heat exchanger.

3:30pm – Our accountants and IT specialist meet to review reporting

Accounting meeting

A short check-in with Accounting and IT keeps everything running smoothly behind the scenes. Another way we ensure our customers experience less downtime!

4:00pm – Our shop technicians finish up the day with a complete rebuild

Rebuilding

In the shop, our rad techs are busy rebuilding an industrial heat exchanger, reinforcing the core with new tubes and a refurbished frame so that it’s ready for extreme hours working in a Canadian mine.

5:00pm – We close up for the day and a fun team soccer game kicks off nearby!

After a busy day of work, our team unwinds with a friendly match of soccer, wrapping up the day with teamwork, laughs and a little friendly competition.
